Stratigraphic
succession of Basrah Area
A composite stratigraphic column (Figure below) was constructed
depending upon the coring for petroleum exploration in
that area. The coring reaches the top of the Sulaiy
Formation.
The top of this succession is the Dibdibba Formation which is
covered by the Hammar Formation. This formation consists
of coarse and very coarse ill-graded sand in the lower
part, and grey clay and thin washes of shells in the
upper part, it belongs to marine origin. The Hammar
Formation is covered by recent alluvial sediments.
