Abstract

Clay mineral distributions in Injana Formation and the underlying Al-Fat'ha Formation show no significant variation, although their depositional environments are different. The former is predominantly fluvial whereas the latter is hypersaline - lagoon. Illite and chlorite are present in both the red colored fluvial sediments and in the grey colored lagoonal sediments.

The only slight variation between the clay mineral suit of these sediments seems to be the nature of chlorite. Mg-chlorite variety is abundant in Injana Formation, while Fe-chlorite is rather dominant in Al-Fat'ha Formation. This may be related to modification of clay minerals during neoformation, transportation or weathering of source rocks.
